Instruments varied greatly but most always included percussion (wood block, small cymbals and drums) and an erhu (simple stringed instrument). Most regions use a combination of both and, of course, put their own twist on things. nicknamed the business of the five, a shadow puppet troupe is made up of five people. one mouth tells stories of thousands of years a pair of hands operates millions of soldiers. Shadow puppet music ranges from traditional music to local opera styles and everything in between. shadow puppetry wins the heart of an audience by its lingering music, exquisite sculpture, brisk color and lively performance. As shadow puppetry developed into an art form in its own right, certain regions began to enlarge their puppets to accommodate for growing audiences and an increasingly visual culture. It didn’t matter, most of the audience was there to listen. Just a few rows back from the front and the exquisite detail in those puppets all but disappears. Shadow puppetry was originally just an accompaniment to the music, hence the phrase ‘are you going to hear a show?’ which explains why the older puppet styles remained so small. The shadow theatre of Asia in both its pragmatic and mythic dimension has a link with death. Music and singing continues to be the backbone of any performance. Only the most popular troupes made their entire living with a combination of these two types of events while most continued to work as farmers during the day and perform for their villages at night. Traditionally, Chinese shadow puppet shows were mostly performed for the larger community as a center point for festival celebrations or for a more select community at private functions such as birthdays, weddings, funerals and house-raisings. Just like Chinese shadow puppet history and aesthetics, performance is something that varied greatly with geography. As most peasants were illiterate up until the mid-1900s, shadow puppetry was one of the most effective ways to quickly spread a message or story. Like all folk arts, these activities were common experiences shared by communities to teach, bond and entertain. Each hour ushers in a changing audience: everyone at first, then the older kids and the elders as the parents put the youngest to bed, then the adults and elders as all the children head to sleep and finally, just the elders remain. They laugh, cry and learn with stories of morality, love, propaganda and bravery. For hours into the dark night, the villagers watch characters and stories come to life before their very eyes. The Chinese shadow puppetry and its continued life in the United States is valuable, because it is a living heritage. From an outsiders perspective, it looks like nothing but a badly made tent – until the lamp is lit. Movement is imparted to a large extent by tilting or rocking the control, but individual strings are plucked when a decided movement is required. Normally they are moved by strings or more often threads, leading from the limbs to a control or crutch held by the manipulator. The shadow troupe of just a few men moves quickly to put up their elevated stage with roughly hewn sticks and some worn fabric. These are full-length figures controlled from above. The sun is setting and villagers are gathering amidst a din of chatter and eating.

Faced with Hitler’s onslaught, one could not always afford to pick one’s allies. We may regard Stalinism with horror, and especially with the benefit of hindsight. If we today live in a democratic and peaceful Europe, we owe a “debt towards those who fought to build it” even if that leaves us with an uneasy complicity with Soviet communism. If all violent political struggles involve tragedy, some deserve more than distanced moral evaluation. Human rights and Holocaust consciousness, not politically compromised anti-fascism, are the new civic religion.Īgainst these apostles of anti-totalitarianism, Traverso sets himself to reinstating the old anti-fascist verities. Their anglophone counterparts are the new historians of the second world war, scholars such as Norman Davies and Timothy Snyder, who see in that conflict little more than a clash of dictatorships that made victims or perpetrators out of everybody who inhabited the “bloodlands”. From the 1970s a bevy of historians and intellectuals, many of them, such as François Furet, former communists, began to re-evaluate the entire epoch, criticising and historicising both fascism and anti-fascism and tracing their bloody struggle all the way back to the French revolution, which was recast as the origin of all modern ideological conflict. In Greece its reverberations could still be felt 70 years later in 2015 as Syriza vainly summoned the heroic memory of the partisans against the might of the eurozone.īut these days in France and Italy, anti-fascism has fallen on hard times. Cloaked in the mythology of the resistance and Popular Front anti-fascism, as well as the hidden histories of collaboration, it left a deep imprint on postwar political culture. He argues that a state of more or less open civil strife extended around the Mediterranean from the 1930s to the 1940s – from Greece and Yugoslavia to Italy, France and Spain. Traverso provides an unfamiliar perspective on these decades, one of European “civil war”. Politics became a matter of life and death. War and civil war merged, as partisans and their pursuers took hostages and made reprisals, German flamethrowers blasted the hillside and American bombers rained down fire. To break open our complacency, in his brilliant opening chapter Traverso plunges us into the blood-soaked history of his home region of Piedmont, where for two terrible years between 19 the Wehrmacht and their fascist henchmen fought a final stand against insurgent partisans and the overwhelming might of the allied armies. How can we understand the “age of extremes” (1914 to 1945) from a present – our present day in the west – that is in general terms allergic to “ideology” and convinced that “there is no alternative”? What happens when an anodyne and self-satisfied liberalism projects its values back into an earlier era of intense political struggle? His political commentaries have appeared in journals and magazines such as Jacobin, Salvage, La Quinzaine littéraire, Contretemps, Lignes, L’Espill, Nueva Sociedad, and the Italian newspaper Il Manifesto.Enzo Traverso’s provocative book, which first appeared in French nine years ago, poses a profoundly important question to modern history. He has received several awards for his historical essays, including the Premio Pozzale, Empoli, Florence (2014) the Premio Lo Straniero/Gli Asini, Lecce (2018) and the Premio Napoli (2022). Beyond his books, Traverso’s articles and reviews have been published in History & Theory, Constellations, Historical Materialism, South Atlantic Quarterly, October, Totalitarian Movements & Political Religions, Revue française de science politique, Raisons politiques, Storia e storiografia, Contemporanea, Pasajes, Acta Poetica. His authored books are translated into more than fifteen languages, and he has contributed to many collected works and. He has been a visiting professor in several European and Latin American universities. Before coming to Cornell in 2013, he taught political science for twenty years in France. He was born in Italy, studied history at the University of Genoa and received his PhD from the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris in 1989. War, fascism, genocide, revolution, and collective memory are the landmarks of his numerous books. His research focuses on the intellectual history and the political ideas of the twentieth century. Axes of type M from Birka are 20–22 cm long, 16–18 cm broad and they weigh 385–770 grams ( Vlasatý 2016). Petersen type M is defined as an iron broad axehead with expanded, wedge-shaped and very thin (usually 2–5 mm) blade and projecting lugs on either side of the head. One of the reasons can be associated with the fact that protective parts of war gear were used more often Petersen type M should be seen as a reaction to usage of maille and helmets, or better, to the centralisation of power. The type was developed from older types of Scandinavian axes (like F, G, H), due to the need for bigger war axes that occured in 10th century in big part of Europe. The type M was introduced around ca. 950 and it was so popular it was used from England to Russia until 13th century ( Petersen 1919: 46–47). When talking about a “Dane axe”, we actually refer to axeheads of Petersen type M. In this chapter, axeheads, shafts and methods of fixing will be discussed. I am absolutely aware of the fact that some reenactors and modern warriors will disagree with the result of this article. There are many kinds of early medieval axes that could be considered as two-handed however, there is no strict line between one-handed and two-handed axes and we can only judge by our common sense. This short overview will discuss two main types of two-handed axes that were used in Scandinavia this time, we disregard Byzantian axes, Baltic axes of Kirpičnikov type IV etc., however, they can be added in the case of interest. Historical background of this weapon is put aside, when the weapon is replicated and used simply because modern rules of fighting are different and historical background is unknown or unattractive to many warriors. What the most problematic part of fighting with this kind of weapon is the fact that modern warriors tend to implement their own ideas of what works on modern battlefields and they avoid of those ideas, which are, in their opinion, not functional. These weapons are very popular and terrifying and the same time. 10 years), I encounter so-called Dane axes, two-handed axes used in second lines on the battlefields. Today, this ancient tool comes with finest details and advanced built. It has a great significance in Minoan culture and signifies power. Another popular example is the labyrinth referred to as the house of the double axe. Likewise, many other axes were used in festivities and religious ceremonies. The two axe blades signify birth and death in the form of ritual. For example, the Swedish History Museum in Stockholm presents a double-headed battle axe designed from clay. In addition to the practical applications, the history of axe always had an interesting symbolic meaning and representation. The warriors were specialized at throwing axe with excellent precision to hunt the target. During this time, the conditions were quite different when it comes to hunting using an axe. Here we would mention the Franziska, one of the commonly used handheld axe in close combat. The ancient models used to have sharp blades and short handles. These axes typically come with a short handle. On the other hand, an axe developed for throwing purposes like a projectile is referred to as a throwing axe. An axe designed for combat is known as a battle axe. Originally, they were used as tools and soon the focus was shifted to its weaponry usage. However, the difference could be seen in the details primarily depending on the culture.Īmong many other armaments, axe is one of the ancient combat weapons you will find.
